Orongan Beach Resort
I know European beaches from East Mediterranian to Barcelona as a swimmer, from about Antalya in the east till Elba in the west, as a sailor. I have dived at various places from Cyprus to Fuertaventura, if you consider it a European island. In Australia, I travelled down from Cooktown to Sydney and sailed there both in the harbour and on the ocean side. Melbourne , Adelaide and Darwin in the north are also places where I have encountered the sea. Altogether around 10.000 and more km by camping truck, 2000 and some on horseback, some hundred on sailboats , and about the same on motorboats. A few places, I have visited by helicopter, and one island with a howerboat.
To my taste, European beaches are either overcrowded or not very beautiful. This is true for places that are being operated as "beach". In the North of Crete, you can drive miles and miles along beaches with thousands of oiled people collecting UV and burning their bottoms. The same is true for many places jn Turkey, Greece, Italy, France or Spain. But if you are looking for beautiful places to swim while sailing, you can find a plethora of excellent beaches, especially during off-season, though. If you love the countryside along the coasts, winter or early spring is the best time. My best encounters with beaches were around March on Greek islands and the Western coast of Turkey. Spanish islands off Africa, you can visit anytime in winter. But forget them in summer.
You will not see much sealife under water, however, because the Mediterrenian is a rather poor habitat for fish. As a diver, I refuse to go down there since 1975. If you love fishing yourself, the entire Mediterranean Sea is rather a desert. I love fishing whatever I may catch. Although I try to catch fish since 2006 while sailing, the entire catch comprised two little tunas and a poor wrasse.
Australian waters are rather diverse. In the North, you are just about 200 miles from the New Guinean cost. It is all tropical waters. And full of salties which are not common to all tropical beaches. In the East, from Cooktown till Heron Island, you have also tropical beaches, but of different and differing quality. A variety of really hostile creatures like box jellifish or blue-ringed octopus in the water and some of the most dangerous snakes or the cane toad may make life less pleasant. And it is told, that white tip sharks seem to wait for you just around the corner. However, I never had any unpleasant encounters except for being attacked by an eastern browne snake while collecting firewood. Even the most venomous snake of the world, the Belcher's Sea Snake, seemed to welcome me under water. It allowed me to take some pictures before disappearing. I camped with my children on unbelievably empty beaches, swam on and around beautiful islands, sailed some hundred miles in Cairns, in Whitsundays and near Heron Island. Moreton Island was another beauty to mention.
Having seen all areas I named above, I would prefer Australian beaches. Fishing opportunities are next to none. At some places, you can spend a week before the next one arrives. If you love crowds around you, why not Bondi Beach? And Australians are unbelievably good sailors and divers. If you can stand drinking and diving, you'll enjoy the best time of your life.
